Good on the ACC for green-lighting the new Hindmarsh Square development

A new $70m development is going to kick off at the site of the Academy Cinema in Hindmarsh square.  The Hines Group will be demolishing the cinema to make way for two towers, a hotel and an apartment building.

If we want a buzzing and dynamic city centre after dark, Adelaide needs to attract more residents to take advantage of the lifestyle within the four terraces.

Projects like the Hindmarsh Square development are exactly what Adelaide needs.

And aside from the residential benefits, the 250 hotel tower will give a boost to tourism in Adelaide.

It’s fantastic to see companies like Hines Group willing to invest so heavily in our city.

Now, if only the council would stop the bickering and get their act together on the Victoria Park redevelopment!

Obviously some too young to know who “Harold Pinter” is. Go and Google or Wikipedia it and you’ll see an old (yet famous) playwrite as a leaeding member of the “Theatre of the Absurd”. I expect he may be like Davies from “The Caretaker” always wanting to do up the lousy bedsit into the swanky penthouse. I expect that “Harold” is a bit jealous of the progress undertaken by others and jaded by the fact that he might be a bit of a “would coulda shoulda...”

While those that have the luxury of being able to maintain righteous rage about, let’s call it unnecessary development, what gets my goat is those complainers that buy into the city lifestyle then whinge about “noise” from long standing venues and then force change in licensing conditions. One might expect some conflicts of interest in these situations...same thing happened in Sydney when a bunch of ritzy flats were buily behind Luna Park. Complainers of noise included those close to North Sydney council, the same ones that granted the original reconditioned operating license to Luna Park two years earlier.

In any case, some constructive thoughts…

Being a resident of Adelaide by choice moving from Sydney, ACC should focus on turning Adelaide CBD into the Silicon Valley of the South. We have a unique layout, available infrastructure and a thriving and growing skill set. Let’s import some good business, fund good growth stories which will promote both youth (the inevitable architects of technolgy) and the more mature business captains that fund, manage and direct the youthful exuberance to greater success.

There is space for both but like most smallish cities, let’s try and put aside the petty politics, in-fighting and grass roots nepotism to feed the major political parties and DO SOMETHING OBJECTIVELY ALTRUISTIC for the GOOD OF ACC, Greater Adelaide and the State as a whole.

Your right Mark, although I believe there is still a need for experience and wisdom on the council. I’m in my early Thirties and believe that there is hope for Adelaide, although so many of my friends have left for sunny QLD or reliable VIC.

I’m willing to stick it out, only if some serious changes are made, and soon.

Harold, You and your ilk are the very reason I left Adelaide (most likely never to return). Who is going to pay for your pension if Adelaide’s ambitious young people keep moving out? You can’t live under a rock forever.

Good luck David, you will need it.

Why don’t you all get off Harolds back. He was probably living in Adelaide way before we had any festivals or car races so in some ways he has more rights to live in the city he thought he was going to peacefully grow old in. I’m sure I’m not the same vintage as Harold but the reason I love living in North Adelaide is because we’ve been able to keep the young riff raff from steering it out of control. You’d be wise learning a thing or two from North Adelaide in voting for someone a little older and wiser in these council elections. I’m sure you’re a pleasant enough young man David Campbell but playing with the city’s future is not a young mans game.

Honestly, Harold is living in the past.  It is only in his eyes that such developments are “pointless”.  The problem with Harold is that he does not have the intellectual capacity to objectively assess projects such as these.  Oh and yes Harold, if you don’t like change or progress for that matter, move to a small country town where bickering amongst your neighbors is the most exciting thing to happen during the week.  Adelaide needs development and does not need people like you.

This is why we need more retirement homes OUTSIDE the city.
We get too many old people whining that improvements are bad.
Hey harold, did you know we have electricity in Adelaide now!!!  Bet you didn’t cos your so old and backwards.

Hey Harold, I swear to God I saw a lovely little cottage for sale in Hahndorf the other day. I recommend you look into purchasing it...the location seems perfect for somebody with such backwards thinking. Peace and tranquility galore!

On to more important matters, I’m very pleased to hear that the new Hindmarsh Square development has been approved. It will certainly add to the square (which might I add has become development central as of late!).

Dave Campbell, I salute you for representing us folks who truly want to see Adelaide change into the thriving, exciting metropolis it should be. Keep up the good work!

Naive and dangerous Harold?  My oh my.  It is old folks like you who are holding back the development of Adelaide into a vibrant and exciting place to be.  Just because you have lived in “tranquility and peace” for decades shouldn’t mean this is how it should always remain.  Change equals progress.  The rest of the world has accepted this for hundreds of years and continues to evolve.  Your argument goes against everything the rest of the developed world has established - kind of like building a one-way freeway Harold!!  If you want to keep living in peace, move to the country and get out the way of progress!

Why should I have to move. I was living in Adelaide long before you were in short pants you arrogant little upstart.
All my friends who live in the city agree with everything I say, and despite your wild claims that 55% of people who live in Adelaide are under 35 (not likely sonny Jim) none of them are going to get off their lazy asses and vote for you. So stop wasting your time. Nothing’s going to change.

Harold you should go and live in Tasmania if you want peace and tranquility. For Adelaide to remain a great place to live needs to become a vibrant place full of youth and vibrance. We need jobs for the youth so that there taxes can pay for you old pensioners… Have you ever been to another major city in the world people live in high density housing quite happily. And with our current water problems due to drought and global warming it is becoming quite clear that the Aussie Dream of the 1/4 acre block in the burbs and the Adelaide Car Culture are uneconomical and environmentally irresponsible....
