Well, The Advertiser certainly was busy with attacks on the Adelaide City Council this weekend! This article by Tim Lloyd also voiced concerns about the continued deadlocks with decisions concerning the city.
While, with an election only a matter of weeks away, any suggestions to improve how we vote in the council is irrelevant now, it’s the underlying premise that at the moment the city is not being well served.
Lloyd suggests that the majority (people who work, shop and play in the city) are being represented by a minority (people voted in my city rate payers).
But there is one other skew that is even more alarming. The majority of those who live in the city (those under 34), are represented by a minority (councilors very much not under 34). It makes no sense.
But why?
There’s an apathy amongst young people to voting in council elections. As a part of my campaign, I am letting those who wouldn’t normally vote know that voting isn’t hard.
If there was a greater under-34 voter turnout, do you think we would be electing difference councils?
