When Adelaide Comes Alive

This year the the Adelaide Fringe Festival became an annual event.  It seems to me that every time the Fringe Festival rolls around the city fills with a buzz that you can almost touch.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I walked down Rundle Street in the midst of the Fringe Festival and heard someone proclaim that they “love it when Adelaide comes alive”

Is it that we don’t feel like our city is alive all year round?

I want to hear what events that bring Adelaide to life for you.

Is it the Clipsal 500, The Tour Down Under, or the Festival of Arts?  Or are you like my wife Rebecca, who gets very excited when the Adelaide International Horse Trials are on?

Love to hear it.

Interesting ‘opinion’ Harold, I’m 24 and llive in Unley and have lived in the CBD for 4 years, and setup a 5 person design agency, I work and play in the city every single day with lots of my friends. Its a great city, and has been for a long time, but i want it to become MORE in what it already is, more festivals, food, wine & culture.

And I’m pretty sure an Intern is different to a Managing Director.

What would a smart alec 24 year old advertising agency intern know about keeping Adelaide Alive? My wife and my friends have lived in Adelaide for more than 40 years and we like it just like it is thank you very much. Most of the people who live in the city are from my generation and agree with me. Believe me nobody wants Adelaide turning into another Melbourne. Stop meddling.

Living only a nice walk from the city, I love the life we get (occassionally) in Adelaide.  Events such as the fringe, womad, tour down under etc do so much for the vitality of our city.  Nothing beats the opening night of the fringe and anyone can enjoy it with so much free entertainment. I agree that the branding of adelaide needs some work. Id like to see our entertainment precincts better defined and advertised.  Hutt street is a fab place to have brunch or a nice dinner in summer, but only really gets recognition that one day they have the food and wine festival.  Rundle street is a great attraction to the youth of adelaide, but is dirty, noisy and relatively boring other than the fringe festival.  And what can we say about Hindley street?  Well im sure a lot of the well connected socialites ("Glamites?") of adelaide could tell you its a wealth of funky new bars and lounges, but its still as tacky as ever if you have to walk the length of it.

At the risk of causing a cliche, lets see a promotion of business in an area to fit and enhance the image and attraction of that area.  lets see some business incentives to help define the culture of adelaide.  Lets see more tourist-dollar attracting draw cards.

Nothing says Adelaide more than The Tour Down Under. The vibe in the city is amazing. The restaurants and pubs are buzzing with people and the huge cheers from the fans makes Adelaide come alive. This event is definitely one i look forward to.

Is it just me, or has the Rundle Street atmosphere dropped off in the last five years? I used to love sitting down Rundle Street with friends. but for some reason these days it almost feels like a ghost town.

Womad is the best thing to hit Adelaide, its like you’re on holiday in another world, but its only 20 minutes from home.
